A mental wellness mobile app that provides therapy resources, mood tracking, and personalized care plans in one integrated platform.

OVERVIEW

Therapy continues beyond the time spent in a session. Clients may need to remember what they discussed, practise new techniques, and notice patterns in everyday life before their next appointment. These activities can require time, motivation, and emotional effort, resources that may be limited precisely when support is most useful. MindWell explores how a mobile product could make these between-session activities easier to approach while respecting privacy, emotional capacity, and professional boundaries.

I designed MindWell as a connected mental-health ecosystem comprising a patient application, a therapist platform, and an administrative platform. This case study focuses on the patient-facing mobile experience.

THE CHALLENGE

The challenge was not simply to place therapy worksheets on a phone. I wanted to explore how a mobile companion could reduce the effort required to begin, provide structure without judgement, and help clients bring useful reflections back into therapy.

How might I make between-session activities easier to approach while giving clients clear control over sensitive information?

The product was designed to support continuity and reflection. It was not intended to diagnose, recommend treatment, predict risk, or replace professional care.

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

I organised the patient application around four recurring needs: completing a daily check-in, working through assigned activities, reviewing progress, and contacting a therapist. Frequently used actions remain easy to reach from the home screen, while more detailed reflection sits one level deeper. This structure keeps the experience manageable without limiting users who want to explore their entries in more detail.

THE LOGO DESIGN

Every visual element in MindWell was intentionally crafted to support therapeutic goals. The interlocking ellipses in the logo represent the connection between therapist and patient, two distinct entities working in harmony, with the blue-to-green gradient symbolizing the journey from calm reflection to growth.

INTERFACE SYSTEM

The design system prioritizes clarity and calm. Clean, highly-readable Inter typography ensures comprehension even during anxious or low-energy states. The restrained palette primarily white backgrounds with blue accents creates a serene, uncluttered space that feels both professionally trustworthy and emotionally safe.

ONBOARDING & ACCOUNT CREATION

Creating an account for mental health support requires extraordinary sensitivity. I crafted an onboarding flow that transparently communicates data security while gently gathering therapeutic context. Each step balances necessary information collection with respect for privacy, using clear language about how data will be used to personalize their healing journey.

WELCOMING ENGAGEMENT

The home screen serves as a gentle entry point designed to meet users at their current emotional capacity. With quick mood check-ins, accessible homework reminders, and visual progress indicators, it provides immediate therapeutic value regardless of energy levels.

EVIDENCE BASED DAILY PARACTICE

Each structured step from situation analysis to balanced thought development provides immediate therapeutic value while creating valuable documentation for treatment progress.

The traditional cognitive behavioral therapy worksheets have transformed into intuitive digital experiences. The thought record guides users through identifying unhelpful thinking patterns, challenging cognitive distortions, and developing healthier perspectives all within a supportive interface that makes complex therapeutic techniques feel approachable and manageable for everyday use between sessions.

PROGRESS VISUALIZATION & MOTIVATION SYSTEM

Healing progress in therapy is often subtle and nonlinear, making it difficult to perceive day-to-day. The progress dashboard transforms abstract emotional journeys into visible, comprehensible data through intuitive visualizations, trend analyses, and milestone celebrations.

BOUNDARY RESPECTING COMMUNICATION

Designed to extend therapeutic support without overwhelming professionals, the messaging system uses urgency-based filtering to maintain healthy boundaries.

EMERGENCY & CRISIS SUPPORT

Mental health applications carry ethical responsibility during crises. Our emergency section provides organized, immediate access to professional help, personal contacts, and therapeutic grounding techniques, all designed for high-stress situations.

LIMITATIONS & NEXT STEPS

The project’s main limitation is that I moved into high-fidelity design before validating the problem with clients and therapists. The proto-personas, priorities, language, and interaction model therefore remain assumption-based.

My next steps would be to:

  • Interview adults with recent therapy experience and practising therapists about how between-session activities are assigned, remembered, completed, avoided, and discussed

  • Replace the proto-personas with behavioural patterns grounded in research

  • Test the onboarding, assigned-activity, thought-record, progress, messaging, and crisis-support flows at low fidelity

  • Work with clinicians to review the terminology, exercise structure, and safety boundaries

  • Define which entries remain private, which can be shared, and how clients can change or withdraw consent

  • Review identity management, encryption, audit logs, retention, and role-based access with engineering and privacy specialists

  • Complete an accessibility audit and test with people who use assistive technologies
